Interview Audio/Video/Podcast

Because I am employed at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC), Kansas City, Kansas, I am aware of the technology used there, as well as some of the technology personnel. Therefore, I decided to ask Nellie Modares to share her expertise with our group. Nellie has worked for KUMC for about 18 years and currently serves as an Educational Technologist who supports the School of Medicine. She earned her master's degree in education technology from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas.
Nellie graciously agreed to stop by my office for the interview, which initially didn’t go well because of poor lighting. We moved into one of the conference rooms and recorded the interview on my I-Pad – which accounts for the not-so-good quality. Nevertheless, I decided to share it here, with the disclaimer that the poor quality is due to my naivety This was my first time ever recording an interview or producing one. (Warning...you’ll need to turn up the volume.)

While discussing the project and my plans to develop a PowerPoint presentation with the video embedded, Nellie mentioned the interactivity of Prezi and how she could demonstrate the use of one of her favorite technologies used at KUMC – Camtasia.  By doing so, she demonstrated a narrated digital presentation. Nellie noted the user friendliness of Camtasia and how faculty members are able to quickly learn and utilize the program within five minutes (Modares, personal communication, October 3, 2012). “Camtasia Studio is another popular option that lends itself to more advanced applications” (King & Cox, 2011, p. 112).

Here’s Nellie’s narrated Prezi presentation. It is six minutes, but worth the time to see technology in action. Enjoy!

  1. Hi Sonora,

Great job finding an actual Educational Technologist to interview! Nellie was very much on the same wavelength as our text authors (King and Cox), particularly in her narrated presentation. She stresses many of the same points, for example, pedagogy driving technology use rather than the reverse, striving for interactivity, and real-world application. It must be wonderful for instructors and students to have the support of dedicated technologists. I wonder how prevalent they are on college campuses.

I couldn't hear your video very well with my laptop speakers, but the audio came through fine with earphones.

    Cheers,
    KSU Cuz

  2. Hi Sonora!

As always, I enjoyed your blog this week. The podcast was brief and direct but managed to give the audience an overview of Mrs. Modares and her views on technology integration in her profession. I especially liked that you added the supplementary podcast to explain the technology to which Mrs. Modares referred in you initial interview. I wish I had known about Camtasia before having to do this podcast. I would have been able to record my interviewee from my computer screen.

Thank you for always putting 100% effort into your blog. I learned a lot from reading it. Good luck in your future endeavors!

  3. Hi Sonora!
You did a great job with your podcast. Interesting how many of us talked with people in the field that use Camtasia. Must be something to that one. I love Prezi! I was introduced to it several classes ago and had a blast developing presentations with it. It's a nice alternative to Power Point. Thanks again for a very interesting video that validates much of what we have discussed in our class!

  4. Sonora,
I enjoyed your blog this week and learning more about Camtasia and Prezi. I am loving being exposed to so many useful technologies that give me flexibility and choice for transmitting information and sharing ideas. I also liked the fact that you provided the additional podcast explaining the technology that Mrs. Modares mentioned in your video. It helped me to 'see' how it actually works. You were also very honest and humble in your recognition that your video was a little hard to hear and the positioning of the camera made it awkward to see you. I made many mistakes in my video but realized that this is a learning experience and mistakes come with the territory! As long as we learn from our mistakes we are headed in the right direction. Thank you for sharing your experiences!

  5. Hi Sonora,
Thanks for demonstrating these technologies. Good selection for an interview. I think you demonstrated the perfect learning for this course, i.e. discovering a new technology and like Dean using it instead of initial choice. Brilliant idea!
